Subconjunctival Hemorrhage

1. What is Subconjunctival Hemorrhage?

It is a condition where a small blood vessel breaks just beneath the clear surface of your eye (conjunctiva), causing a bright red patch on the white part (sclera). It looks alarming but is usually harmless.

2. What causes it?

  • ● Sudden cough, sneeze, or strain (like lifting heavy objects)
  • ● High blood pressure
  • ● Eye rubbing or injury
  • ● Blood-thinning medicines

3. What are the symptoms?

  • ● A red patch on the white of the eye
  • ● No pain or vision loss
  • ● Occasionally mild irritation or heaviness

4. Is it dangerous?

In most cases, it’s harmless and clears up within 1–2 weeks. However, if recurrent or associated with bleeding elsewhere, further evaluation is needed.

5. What should I do if it happens?

  • ● Do not panic.
  • ● Avoid rubbing your eyes.
  • ● Visit your eye doctor for blood pressure check and eye examination.
