Spring Catarrh / Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC)

1. What is Spring Catarrh or VKC?

Spring Catarrh, also called Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), is a seasonal allergic eye disease that usually occurs in children and young adults during the spring and summer months. It causes intense itching, redness, and watering.

2. What causes VKC?

VKC is caused by an allergic reaction of the eyes to environmental allergens like pollen, dust, or pollution. Genetic predisposition may also play a role.

3. What are the symptoms?

  • ● Severe itching, especially in hot weather
  • ● Red, watery eyes
  • ● Thick, stringy mucus discharge
  • ● Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • ● Feeling of sand or grit in the eyes
  • ● Large bumps (papillae) on the upper eyelid inside

4. Who is at risk?

  • ● Children and teenagers (mostly boys)
  • ● Those with other allergic conditions like asthma or eczema
  • ● People living in hot and dry climates
  • 5. How is VKC diagnosed?

Diagnosis is clinical, based on history, symptoms, and eye examination. Slit-lamp examination is used to check for papillae and corneal involvement.

    6. Treatment options:

    • ● Lubricating and antihistamine eye drops to relieve itching
    • ● Mast cell stabilizers or steroid drops for severe inflammation
    • ● Cold compresses to reduce discomfort
    • ● Avoiding allergens and maintaining good hygiene
